I might be fan girling just a little right now because our featured artist is an incredibly talented photographer with one of my all time FAVORITE Instagram feeds. Like I’d re-gram her on the daily if that wasn’t weird.
But it is, so just go follower her and see for yourself.
To be totally honest, I have not yet met our guest in person, BUT one thing I really appreciate about her is her authenticity in how she shows up in her feed. While stylish, curated feeds are pretty to look at, they often feel distant and hard to connect with. Not this one.
Without further delay, I’d like to introduce you to Ashley Goodwin of Ashley Good Photography (est. 2009), a Hawaii Wedding + Destination Photographer
Please tell us a little about yourself and about your business:
I’m a former interior designer turned wedding photographer, self proclaimed wayfarer and avid tassel collector, a southern girl curating her wildly colorful island life. Inspired by a dreamy mix of of bright, unexpected colors with a youthful and feminine edge. Whether it’s framing a couple against a cotton candy sky on during an engagement session, curating the perfect mix of bridal details on a wedding day or styling up the island’s foraged florals for a commercial shoot, I simply can’t shake the love of all things design.
However it’s truly my love of art, color and tiny bits of daily life scenes on the island that inspired me to launch my favorite photographs as prints from postcards to 24×36″ prints. They are available online here and in store at Eden in Love in Honolulu AND in Las Vegas!
What inspired you to start this business?
Once an Interior Designer and freelance Newspaper Photographer, my passion for connecting with people combined with an innate adoration of all things creative pulled my aspiring gypsy soul deep into wedding photography.
What’s the best advice you have for small business owners?
Putting your head down and hustling may get you there, but it’s nurturing genuine connections and real life friendships that get you through.
What is the hardest challenge or challenges you face as a small, local company?
Being a “One Woman Show”! You’ve got all these ideas and you want to do them all, heck, you probably CAN! But the daily grind can keep you occupied. Meanwhile hiring help can be daunting all in itself but having a trusted hand to push you to the next level is necessary to flourish and grow.
What sets you apart from others in your industry?
I’ve got so much respect for all the creatives in my industry, especially fellow film photographers. While I take pride in shooting exclusively film, I think it’s my eye for bold colors, unique textures and unexpected styling that sets me apart from the crowd. It’s that designer in my blood. I am always on the lookout for unusual perspectives inside of wedding venues and can’t get enough of curating a bride’s accoutrement — often using pretty little details that make onlookers say “I’d never think to do that!”. It’s an eye for the of-the-moment bright, fun and dreamy nearly all girls can appreciate.
What’s your favorite part of your business?
Meeting people, creating and being creative.
And, let’s be honest, sleeping late when I want to.
Favorite holiday?
CHRISTMAS! Oh, the joy, the food, the traditions, the nostalgia, the LIGHTS! It’s magic.
Favorite Instagram feed these days?
I may lose all cred for saying this but: my own. LOLOLZ. Yes, I know. But hear me out! I used to compare and contrast my work to every incredible artist under the sun until I went on my first mission trip to Thailand a few years ago where internet access was few and far between. It forced me to disconnect from the world, literally. When I came back to briefly scroll my own portfolio I was impressed by my own creations, saying “hey girl, you aren’t half bad!” Nowadays I consciously admire others from afar but really try to focus on appreciating without getting sucked into what everyone else is doing and, in turn, try to stay inspired by my own creations.
…but @DesignLoveFest is bursting at the seams with all things pretty.
